Common Questions from Organisations

Is this the same as an NHS Fit Note?

No. MedicalCert certificates are private medical letters issued by GMC-registered doctors. They are not NHS Med3 "Fit Notes" (Statements of Fitness for Work). Med3 Fit Notes are issued exclusively by NHS GPs and are required for UK government benefit claims such as Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). MedicalCert does not issue Med3 Fit Notes.

Are the doctors really GMC registered?

Yes. Every doctor on the platform holds full registration with the UK General Medical Council, has an active licence to practise, and maintains their own professional indemnity insurance. You can verify any doctor's registration on the official GMC register using the GMC number printed on the certificate.

Do I have to accept this certificate?

That is your organisation's decision. A MedicalCert certificate provides a clinical opinion from a GMC-registered doctor. Whether to accept private medical documentation is governed by your own internal policies. The certificate is a signed, verifiable medical document — but final acceptance criteria are yours to apply.

How is verification free?

Verification is a core part of our service and is always free for receiving organisations. You can scan the QR code, use the online portal, or email verify@medicalcert.co.uk at no cost.

Was this certificate reviewed by a real doctor?

Yes. There are no automated approvals. Every request is reviewed individually by a named GMC-registered doctor who assesses the clinical evidence, exercises independent professional judgement, and decides whether to issue or decline. If the doctor determines there is insufficient clinical basis, the certificate is not issued.

Can I contact the issuing doctor?

For verification purposes, contact our verification team at verify@medicalcert.co.uk or call 0131 270 3762. The doctor's GMC number on the certificate can also be checked independently via the GMC register.
